Reflections on creating an Online Partnership

This is my 3rd quarter in the OTL program and I am getting the hang of starting a new online course.  Read the Announcements?  Check.  Read the syllabus?  Check.  Read the Weekly Assignments?  Check.  Scan the Discussion Board?  Check.  Post on the Ice Breaker thread?

This time the Ice Breaker was a little more complicated.  I liked the interview prompt and was happy to answer the questions and summarize the answers of my partner.  Finding a partner on the other hand was a little like waiting to be chosen for the recess kickball game.  It was a mad frenzy of checking the discussion board forum, sending out emails, sending out mass emails and rejection (if that person had already found a partner.)  While that part is done, now we have to find another partnership to join up with.  Geez, I hope I'm not the last kid on the sideline waiting to be picked!

  1. I hate pairing up too. This icebreaker was interesting. It certainly extracted lots of information. I was a little surprised by the flurry of "rah rah" and "me too" messages that followed. Apparently, this was in response to a requirement to "reply to at least two" interviews. I am not rule bound.

  2. Agreed - while the interview concept was very different and innovative, the mad scramble was a downside. in my case, I happened to be checking my Horizon e-mail when Kim's e-mail looking for an interview partner came through so I replied, but hadn't actually gotten to review the requirements of that part of the weekly assignment at that point. Where a class is asynchronous, having synchronous elements like this can be distracting, because there is that feeling that if you don't have a partner by day 2 then you are behind, when that is not necessarily the case
